Department of Liberal Studies

Liberal Studies is the 'Elementary Education' Major at Á½ÐÔÉ«ÎçÒ¹ and is home to students who wish to pursue one of two undergraduate program pathways- a B.A. in Liberal Studies (BA) only or our Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP). Á½ÐÔÉ«ÎçÒ¹ in the ITEP pathway may choose to pursue their BA with a Multiple Subjects Credential, an Education Specialist Credential, or they may pursue the Urban Dual Credential Program (UDCP) pathway which includes both the Multiple Subjects and Education Specialist credentials within a 4- to 5-year period.

We pride ourselves on offering rigorous coursework with responsive faculty, early clinical experiences in local elementary and middle schools, and hands-on advising that begins before students arrive to campus. Please explore our program at Á½ÐÔÉ«ÎçÒ¹, along with all of the amazing opportunities and resources for future educators. Go Beach! Go Teach!

Summer and Winter Semesters

Current, continuing students who are declared in the Liberal Studies major may schedule Zoom, Phone, or In-Person Advising Appointments via email. Please email the Advisors directly at Ced-LibSt@csulb.edu. We will work with you directly to determine a day, time, and modality that works best.

Other Notes Regarding Appointments

Beginning of Semester & Registration Period: Liberal Studies Advisors do not schedule any advising appointments during the first week of Fall/Spring semesters (late August or late January) and first two weeks of Fall/Spring registration (early November or early April). It is common for student need and communications to increase substantially during these times, so we put all advisors on-call and/or scheduled for 'drop in' assistance and email availability as result, in order to assist and support as many students as possible in a timely manner. We appreciate your understanding.

Newly Admitted Á½ÐÔÉ«ÎçÒ¹: Fall 2025 Admitted Á½ÐÔÉ«ÎçÒ¹ are not able to schedule appointments at this time. Refer to the College of Education Orientation Website for details on what to expect and advising support for this upcoming summer.

You are welcome here and we encourage you to get involved. The Liberal Studies Student Association (LSSA) meets several times per semester and is a great place to meet and socialize with peers. And our College of Education Student Ambassadors always play a major support in the college, to both students and faculty/staff. Our program also provides Liberal Studies Peer Mentors who are also vital assets in continuing to build a strong student community.

We welcome you to explore our program, along with all of the amazing opportunities and resources for future educators. Go Beach! Go Teach!
