CHLS Book Launch Celebration for Jacob Teran

The Department of Chicano & Latino Studies is celebrating Jacob Teran on his new book: The Calling.

"The Calling is a riveting story of a young Chicano’s journey in discovering his own identity with decisions he must make on his own. A coming-of-age story of a young Chicano man whose barrio filled with gangs, drugs, and violence pushed him to explore his own identity. Completely focused on joining the Marine Corps after dropping out of high school and occupying a juvenile detention center, Guillermo Tierra grapples with societal obstacles to reach a goal. When external issues arise that Tierra cannot join the Marine Corps at first, he must make a decision that will ultimately alter the trajectory of his life. Moreover, the audience follows the protagonist, Guillermo Tierra, into multiple worlds that reveal the layers to his character, upbringing, and ambitions to becoming who he ultimately sees himself, when life does not go as planned. When college becomes a potential pathway to joining the military, critical thinking and his Chicano identity allow him to reconsider what his calling in life may be."
